Town Hall Green is located within a National Register Historic District and a Local Historic District. They are linear districts, protecting the buildings along the Old Post Road on either side of the green. The buildings in this area are well preserved. One long block north is the Boston Post Road running parallel to the Old Post Road, the major commercial strip in Fairfield. Commercial development has been creeping south on the side streets toward the Old Post Road and the historic district, increasing traffic along the Old Post Road. Such development can have a potential negative impact on a residential neighborhood such as the historic district, but so far, the neighborhood has been holding its own.
