Contemporary commercial development.
On the large lot to the west of the Elisha Sage House stands a somewhat deteriorating 19th-century house. It is not surprising because the lot is zoned for commercial use. As a result, there will eventually be a commercial establishment next to the historic house which in turn will encourage further commercial use of the land along West Street. This is less problematic than it might be for other historic greens, because this is one of Cromwell's secondary historic greens. However, the transition from residential to commercial use of the property along West Street will completely negate the value of the green as an historic resource.
