Woodbury Center Green

The South Green is a large, almost triangular area at the south end of the original town common. (The east side of the triangle forms an ellipse rather than a straight line). The South Green is bisected by Woodbury's Main Street (Route 6) leaving only a very long, narrow greensward east of Route 6. This long, narrow greensward is divided by Park Road which turns off Route 6 to the east. The area south of Park Road is low and marshy; only a few small trees (crabapple) are planted here. The area north of Park Road is higher and planted with maple, dogwood, locust and evergreen trees. At the widest part of this area of the green stands an obelisk commemorating Woodbury's Civil War veterans. The obelisk is flanked on the north and south by Civil War cannons.

The area of the South Green west of Route 6 drops off steeply from Route 6 and is therefore hidden from the view of passing motorists by the guard rail along the road. Almost directly across from Park Road and behind the guard rail is a Benjamin Franklin mile marker and a small sign indicating that it is such. Stepping stones lead down from the mile marker to a large rock from which the town drummer called Woodbury's first congregation to church in the 17th century.

The Center Green is the smallest of the three Woodbury greens. It lays in a recessed area along Main Street with the land rising to the north, the south, and the east of the green. The Center Green appears larger than it actually is because, beyond the brief interruption of paved streets, it is contiguous with the broad lawns of the post office to the west and a church to the north. This small, rectangular green is bordered by trees and shrubs creating a closed-in, sheltered effect when one is standing -- or sitting on one of the benches -- on the green. This was thoughtful landscaping as Route 6 is a very busy street and the adjacent post office is equally busy. At the north end of the green is a small granite boulder with a plaque acclaiming this "The Cushman Green." At the south end is another, slightly larger war memorial bearing only the following inscription: "In honor of those men and women who served in the armed forces of the United States of America."

The North Green is a triangular greensward along Route 6 in a relatively quiet, residential/commercial/civic area at the north end of Woodbury Center. Trees are planted along all the borders and more thickly where the terrain rises toward the Pleasant Street/Green Circle intersection. There is an octagonal memorial bandstand (1986) at the north end of the green near Pleasant Street. Near it to the east is a large flagpole and near the flagpole are three benches. Poles for electrical wires and an electrical box are on the green at the edge of Pleasant Street, but wires supplying electricity to the bandstand are underground.
