Windham Green

Windham green is a grassy square measuring about 100 feet by 200 feet with a small triangular extension at the north end. Four roads radiate from it including Route 14 (Scotland Road) to the east; Windham Center Road (Route 203) to the south; Plains Road to the west; and Bricktop Road (Route 203) to the northwest.

It is planted with mature trees but basically remains unimproved. No curbs protect it from the street and no paths direct circulation. Two war memorials are located on the green, one in honor of those who fought in World War Two and the other remembering Vietnam War veterans. A town sign post is located in the southeast corner. It is a well-kept, quiet green within a residential neighborhood dating from the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Early land use patterns are still evident in that the lots are generally longer than they are wide and are evenly spaced around it providing a rhythmic enclosure of building to open space which is very much part of the charm of the green.

The buildings facing the green are primarily residential (although some have served other purposes over the years) and date from the 18th and 19th centuries. One of the dominant buildings facing the green is the Windham Free Library, a Greek Revival temple form which was originally constructed as a bank in 1832 but closed its doors in 1879 when Willimantic became the dominant commercial force in the area. To the north of the library is Dr. Hunt's office, a very narrow, one and one-half story structure built as a doctor's office in about 1790 and moved to the site from behind another building facing the green. It provides a startling contrast to the other buildings around the green, all large structures.

The other dominant structure is the Congregational Church which was built in 1887 to replace the previous church that burned in 1885. It contains several elements of late-Victorian styles, but it is predominantly Queen Anne. Bayles described Windham Center as a quiet, luxuriant, well-preserved and attractive village. It still is today.
