Willington Town Common

Willington Green, located within the Willington Common National Register Historic District and a local historic district, is dramatically sited on Willington Hill so that the original town center clustered around it is evident only as one comes up and over the ridge from the south, east and west. It is located on the north side of Route 44 (Tolland Turnpike) which was laid out ten rods wide as Wolcott Road by the Proprietors in 1723. The dry stone walls set back from the highway east of the green recall old boundary lines and underscores the rural nature of the community.

The green, a rectangle measuring about two acres, is bounded by Route 44 on the south, Jared Sparks Road on the east and Common Road on the north and west. Mature sugar maple trees have been planted near the northern boundary and younger ones along Route 44. At the east and west ends are groupings of crabapple trees and at the center near Jared Road is a Colorado Spruce tree. Near the spruce is a roughly cut stone block with a bronze plaque commemorating those who fought in World War One.

No curbs protect it from the street so there is some erosion of the green along the northern boundary where cars occasionally park. Three benches in the northeast corner provide seating for those who choose to sit and contemplate the historic landscape.

The buildings framing the green were built in the 18th and 19th centuries. They include two churches, the Old Town Hall, a parsonage and other residences (some once used as stores and taverns). The two churches are the most dominant elements of the streetscape. However, the Congregational Church and the Old Town Hall beside it on the northeast corner across narrow Common Road are the focal point of the green.
