War Memorial Park
|
|
War Memorial Park is a long triangle bounded by the Shetucket River on the north, Park Drive on the south; and Route 207 (West Main Street) on the east. Along Route 207 and Park Drive is a sidewalk. The narrowness of the park is reinforced by a large pruned yew hedge (8' tall by 8' wide) lining Park Drive. Its raison d'etre, a field stone war memorial, is situated near the center and reached by a concrete path from Route 207. It is an assembly of several monuments honoring those who served in World Wars One and Two, Vietnam and Korea. Two large Colorado spruce trees and a few smaller trees frame it. The park is well maintained. The park is framed by five identical 19th century frame duplexes along Park Drive. To the west is the company store now occupied by a convenience store and laundromat. Apartments are on the second floor (at one time, the second floor, then called Spraque Hall, was a community hall used for meetings and entertainment).
