Town Green

The irregular-shaped green is divided by the Shunock River, which crosses it diagonally, flowing under the road just east of the green. A small wooden pedestrian bridge joins the two halves of the space.

The southern end, adjacent to Main Street, consists of a lawn area, ornamental plantings along the channelized river, a flagpole in the center, and several large trees. A boulder placed against the planting bed contains a plaque that reads: "North Stonington Connecticut/Area first settled 1680/Organized as North Society of/Stonington 1721 incorporated as town of/North Stonington 1807/1776 Bicentennial 1976.

Across the bridge, the northern portion of the green is larger with more lawn area. A steep hillside forms the northern boundary and residences are to the east and west sides.

Several well-maintained historic structures line Main Street opposite the green. At 77 Main Street is a Greek Revival home that was built c. 1838. A small cottage-style residence (c. 1790) stands at 85 Main Street and the North Stonington Congregational Church is west of the green at 89 Main Street. This Greek Revival structure, built in 1848, supports a four-stage spire and is embellished with an Ionic portico and corner pilasters.

As a result of the large number of ornamental plantings and the mid-block location, the green has the look and feel of a park, rather than a green in the traditional sense.
