The Village Common is a rectangular-shaped area containing less than an acre on the rise in terrain in Redding Center. It is situated at the northeast corner of Sanford Town Road and Cross Highway. The northern boundary is marked by a white picket fence and on the east is a Greek Revival Church which towers over the small common. An asphalted lane cuts diagonally across the green from the church at the southeast corner to the Old Town Hall on the northwest corner, probably following the course of an old path. As a result, the green appears to be triangular in shape and bounded by roads.
The common has never been improved. There are no plantings with the exception of some shrubs around a World War One memorial (a granite boulder with a bronze plaque) at the western edge. A few mature deciduous trees behind the picket fence and across Cross Highway from the common provide a little shade. At the northeast corner is a single stone hitching post. A sign board within a small triangle surrounded by roads southeast of the intersection displays a town map for passing tourists, recalling the earlier function of the Village Common as the cultural and civic center of the community.
The residences around the green were built in the last half of the 18th century and predate the construction of the town hall and church which were erected in the first half of the 19th century. Many of these buildings have outbuildings associated with them, evidence of the agrarian roots of the community.
