Railroad Green

Railroad Green is a rectangular-shaped parcel bordered by Hall Avenue on the west, Center Street (Route 5) on the north and Quinnipiac Street on the east. To the south is the Railroad Station (1872) separated by an asphalt drive. The green has recently been landscaped by an Avon, Connecticut firm of Johnson & Richter, Inc. It includes new curbs, brick paving around the exterior with seating areas extending into the green, period lighting, and an in-ground irrigation system. The formal design is reinforced by honeylocust trees that are planted equidistant apart between the seating areas along Hall Avenue and Quinnipiac Street.

Dominating the green is an octagonal bandstand, also surrounded by paving, near Center Street on the site of the earlier bandstand.

The green is surrounded by one to three-story commercial structures of little distinction constructed during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Their consistent scale and set back from the street provide comfortable enclosure for the open space.
