Prospect Green

The Prospect Green is sited on the highest settled point in New Haven County. In 1878, it was still possible to see Long Island Sound on a clear day. Today pleasant views still exist from the green, a rectangle bounded by Route 68 and Center and Church Streets. It is shaded by a few trees, mostly maples, near the edges, but for the most part the green remains open. South of the library is an evergreen planted c. 1925 by the Girl Scouts to be used as the Christmas tree, but it is too large to use as such today. East of the library is an oak tree, a scion of the original Charter Oak. It is said to grow on the site of a sycamore tree in which was found a bayonet in the hollow core when it was cut down. The focal point of the green is the Civil War Soldiers Monument (1907) situated in the center toward the south. Near it is another war memorial and a flagpole. The site of the first buying ground at the south corner across from the green is marked with a large tree and a plaque. At the north end of the green is a one story fieldstone library built in 1903-1904. To the north and below it is Route 68, not visible from the green. The green has remained the focal point of religious activities since it was established. The Congregational Church (1941) to the west of it is the fourth church on the site. The Grange Hall (1947), the other dominant feature of the green's streetscape and located at the southern end, is the second grange on the site. The first one was constructed in 1897 and destroyed by fire in 1943. The other buildings around the green include the Parsonage (1941), a 19th century residence once used as a parsonage, and a school house (c. 1865), now used by the local historical society. Thus all the buildings relate functionally, visually and historically to the green although four of them are 20th century structures. The somewhat awkward contrast in styles, types and dates of the buildings around the green is part of the charm of the historic town center.
