Morris Memorial Park

The Morris Memorial Park is an open lot of approximately 1.75 acres at the southeast corner of Routes 61 and 109 in the center of the town of Morris. The town center is primarily rural - without sidewalks or pedestrian access between properties. Numerous civic institutions are located near the crossroads including the town hall and community center, library, school, fire department and Congregational Church. Memorial park is the focal point of this area. The park has two levels. The higher level nearer the intersection is nearly square with uneven terrain due to growth over the foundation remains. This area is shaded by mature maple trees and numerous crabapple trees. Annual flower beds follow both Routes 16 and 109 near the intersection. A bench, shaded by a maple tree, faces each route. Near the northeast corner of this upper level is a small monument commemorating the site of the Morris Academy and behind the monument are steps which stand alone as a left-over artifact of the vanished academy.

Behind the steps, rising from the lower level of the park, are the remains of a building foundation - its source is uncertain. The park drops off steeply behind the foundations, approximately 15 feet, to form an elongated rectangular section stretching behind the fire department. The fire department, a large concrete and brick building constructed in the last quarter of the 20th century is substantial, austere, and dominates that section of the park to the rear Route 61 to the front.

A pond has been built since 1968 at the southern end of this section of the park. The northern end of this lower section of the park is shaded by a few maple trees, but the southern end around the pond is without trees. At the southern end of the pond is a flagpole and two tablets mounted on separate stones on either side of the flagpole, one commemorating Morris Veterans of World War One and World War Two, the other commemorating Morris veterans of Korea and Vietnam. This lower level of the park is adjacent to the high school and the school playing fields. School and park are separated by a gravel driveway and parking area.
