Meeting House Green, Westminster Green

Meeting House Green is an idyllic hilltop site (one of the highest in the state), the location of the Westminster Congregational Church and cemetery. The church parsonage is at the eastern boundary of the property and Connecticut State Route 14 is at the southern boundary. The church sits back from the road on a slight rise. A dirt road forms a half-circle in front of the church, entering and exiting on Route 14. A few feet back from the road is the church identification sign. A huge, lovely hydrangea shrub forms a backdrop for the sign. Behind the sign is a flagpole. In front of the church, just across the driveway, is a stone pillar that was used in Colonial times as a whipping post.

The western property line is delineated by a low stone. A cast-iron fence, mounted on a stone foundation, separates the open space from the cemetery behind the church.

Many notable trees grace the green, living witnesses to past events. Along the south end of the driveway are several large shade trees and a smaller dogwood. At the north end of the driveway, a proud hemlock struggles for life, perhaps a victim of the whooly adelgid insect that is destroying the native hemlock population. A massive ash tree (60" in diameter at chest height) grows along the north property line. More large hemlocks dot the fine line along the cemetery property.

Facing the green, across Route 14, are unassuming residential structures.
