Ledyard Green

Ledyard Green is a broad lawn bounded by the Congregational Church to the north, the Bill Library to the south, the library parking lot to the east, and Connecticut State Route 117 to the west. The grade of the green rises abruptly from Route 117 at the south end and gradually from Route 117 to the parking lot at the north end. A sidewalk runs between Route 117 and the library parking lot.

The green is dominated by war memorials. The Civil War Memorial is adjacent to the west wing of the library. The monument, an obelisk supported by a three-tiered square base, has an inscription that reads, "In honor of the men of Ledyard who fought for the preservation of the Union in the war of 1861-5, erected July 4 A.D. 1873 by Ledyard Bill. A "Roll of the Fallen" is on each of the other three sides. Four cannon barrels surround the memorial.

Near Route 117, at the west end of the green, is a memorial grouping consisting of monuments to veterans of Korea, World War I, World War II, and Vietnam. The World War I monument was moved up to the site and is composed of a brass plaque set within a granite boulder. Centered between the war memorials is a granite boulder with engraved lettering that reads, "In Memory of the Men and Women of Ledyard who Served Their Country in the Defense of Freedom.""Flanders Fields," a poem by John McCrae, M.D., follows. Extending in front of the monuments is a stone terrace. A plaque set within the paving reads, "Presented to the Town of Ledyard by the Ledyard Lions Club, Memorial Day 1989." A flagpole rises behind the monuments.

Landscaping on the green consists of shade trees and a mix of rhododendron, holly, juniper and pierus shrubs.

The library, a shingle-style building constructed in 1893, and the white Congregational Church complement the green expanse.
