Greenfield Hill Green

The Greenfield Green is situated on the crest of what has been known as Academy Hill because of the schoolhouse initially built at its peak and the subsequent schools built near it. No schools grace the knoll today, but the Congregational Church is still located on it. The church is perched near the highest point overlooking a picturesque triangle to the south bounded by Bronson Road. This area is generally thought of as the green because of the presence of the towering church facing it. However, this triangle is part of a larger area comprised of three lots at the intersection of Old Academy Road and Bronson Road that were originally set aside as common land, thought of as the "green" in a broader sense, and still owned by the Town of Fairfield. For the purposes of this survey, the triangular plot to the south of the church is considered to be "the green." It is accompanied by a small inverted triangle to the west of it separated by the road where the first meetinghouse is thought to have been located.

The triangular-shaped parcel is about 350 feet, long and 110 feet wide at its widest point. It is surrounded by a granite curb. The green in front of the church is surrounded by maples and one large oak tree which are interspersed with the dogwoods. However, the green is dominated by two extremely large copper beech trees planted in the center. The only monument is a large boulder with a bronze plaque dedicated to those who served in World War I. To the north the edge of the green has been cut back to accommodate automobiles that use the mail box located at the northeast corner.

(To the north and east of this triangulated parcel are the other two town-owned parcels mentioned above. Directly to the north is a two-acre parcel upon which the church is located. The other 1.8 acre triangulated parcel is located to the east of it. Each of these parcels is ringed with dogwood trees for which the site has long been noted.)
