Green at Manchester Green

The green at Manchester Green is a triangular greensward surrounded by East Center Street, Middle Turnpike, and Woodbridge Street. At the north end of the green is a dense clutter of trees, including evergreen, shade, and flowering trees. A sheltered bus stop stands along Woodbridge Street, at the center of the green. An asphalt sidewalk leads from Middle Turnpike to the bus stop where it ends. Directly to the north of the bus stop is a large stone imbedded with a bronze plaque. The plaque reads in part, "Woodbridge Tavern/Here George Washington Stopped/And Was Entertained November 9, 1789/This Monument Was Erected by Memorial Lodge No. 38/Knights of Pythias/July 4, 1936." The only other objects on the green are utilities, a fire hydrant toward the northwest corner, and an electric transformer at the northeast end.

Facing the green on Woodbridge Street is a gas station. It was on this site that the Woodbridge Tavern was actually located. Across from the green on Middle Turnpike stands a convenience store housed within the first floor of a residential structure, a residence, and a printing facility. Facing the green on East Center Street is a 20th century multifamily housing complex. The green space within this complex is a complement to the green. Taken together they provide a sizable amount of green space.
