Granby Green

The Granby Green is a triangular piece of land defined by East Granby Road to the north, Salmon Brook Road to the west, and Park Place to the east. The green is dominated by a brownstone Civil War memorial near the center of the green. The memorial, a union soldier atop a columnar base, is set on a mound that adds to its impressive height. The monument is inscribed, "This monument is erected by voluntary contributions in commemoration of the brave men from the town of Granby who laid down their lives for the Union in the War of the Great Rebellion." On the four sides are inscribed the names of 37 men, their regiments, and dates of death. Toward the south end of the green is a monument to veterans of World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars, which is set within a small landscaped area. The granite plinth is set on a square base on which bronze tablets are applied. The monument immortalizes those who gave their lives, while a nearby bronze plaque honors all who served in the wars. The monument is set within the center of a circular sidewalk, which extends to parking spaces on Park Place. A row of shrubs separates this area from the parking lot. A flagpole flying the U.S. and POW/MIA flags is located a few feet north of the monument.

A tennis court surrounded by an ornamental chain-link fence lies along the eastern edge of the green.

The green is profusely landscaped with shade and flowering trees, shrubs, and flowers. Redwood benches are placed around the tennis court. Other noteworthy features include a drain south of the war monument and several public notice signs along the Salmon Brook Road border.

Well-maintained 19th century homes face the green on Salmon Brook Road and East Granby Road, while commercial buildings are on Park Place. Diagonally from the green on the triangle formed by the intersection of North Granby Road and Salmon Brook Road is a monument to World War I veterans. A plaque in this space proclaims that the original meetinghouse was located nearby.
