Gold Star Memorial Green
|
|
Gold Star Memorial Green is a well-established triangular parcel bounded by West Street, Lincoln Street and St. John's Court. It is bisected by Elm Road leaving a small, isolated triangle at the eastern end. It is smoothly graded and slopes gently toward the south. Thirteen mature trees, mostly Norway maples, grow along West Street and St. John's Court. A sidewalk runs along West Street and in the center near Elm Road is a flag and a single wood sign identifying the space. The green is located within what is primarily a residential neighborhood with some commercial development. The dominant feature is St. John's Catholic Church (c. 1954) erected near the site of the old Baptist Church. The residences around it range in age from the Elisha Sage House (1776; one of the best preserved examples of Colonial architecture in Cromwell) to the 20th-century residence to the east of it. A Dairy Mart is located just north of the green between Gold Star Memorial Green and West Green on West Street, an old and important artery feeding Cromwell.
