Crossroads Common (Library Green)

The green is a flat piece of land .8 acres in area and a curving triangle in shape. It is bordered by the Bolton Center Road along its south side and the old highway, the Old Bolton Road, along its northern and eastern sides. There are five buildings ranged along the curve of the Old Bolton Road across from the green. The Hans Christian Andersen Montessori school is housed in the former St. Maurice Shapel, simple A-framed vernacular, white clapboard building (1938) which faces onto the east side of the green. To the northeast is the Bentley Memorial Library (1975). This is a small low modern building on the Old Bolton Road and the most prominently positioned structure facing onto the green. A modern log home with shed porch and a second modern residence beside it are partially obscured by trees and overgrown shrubs. The oldest building dating from 1845, a large Greek Revival house, is on the south side. The single building on the long north side of the green is a modern split level house and is set back some 200 feet from the street line.

This is a large green and it greatly depends on the border of mature trees of the properties surrounding it, to the south and east, for definition and a sense of enclosure. Its focal point is the new bandstand gazebo, a simply detailed octagonal wood structure about 20 feet across surrounded by benches, flowerbeds and young pin oak trees. A history board and town bulletin board are also located on the green. Summer concerts are held here as well as other outdoor activities - frisbee, walks, etc.
