City Hall Park

McLevy Green is a rectangular area about seven-tenths of an acre on both sides of the old City Hall in downtown Bridgeport. It is surrounded by two-lane streets on all four sides: Broad Street on the west, Bank Street on the North, Main Street to the east, and State Street to the south.

The siting of McLevy Hall, the old city hall, on the green divides it in two unequal sections. The red stone classical building has a strong presence with the older mature evergreens planted around it. In the larger portion of the green to the east of McLevy Hall, concrete paths lead from the four corners to a circular flowerbed with the town history board in the center. The grassy areas are planted with mature oak and maple trees. Generously wide sidewalks separate the green from the heavily-trafficked streets giving it a defined edge. The three- and four-story densely packed buildings around it make it feel more like an urban park. The buildings, mostly banks and offices, are well maintained but empty at night. As a result, the green attracts the destitute and homeless in the evenings.
