Central Park

Central Park, situated within the National Register Historic District, is a long oval park measuring about 435 feet (east-west axis) by 75 feet. Located in the center of Rockville, it is bounded by East Main Street on the south and Park Place on the north (a one-way street heading west). At the western edge is the intersection of Elm, West Main and Union (East Main) Streets. Central Park is the focal point of the densely-packed urban center that reached its economic peak in the second half of the 19th century. This period is represented by the civic, religious, and commercial buildings bordering the park on the west and north. The park slopes to the south and is surrounded by two courses of large granite ashlar blocks. It is transversed by concrete paths near the east and toward the west ends that are reached by granite steps from the street. Around the perimeter is a sidewalk. Six mature sugar maple trees grace the small park, primarily along the southern edge. It is further landscaped with numerous smaller trees (crabapple and dogwood), several shrub plantings and small flower beds. Reproduction Victorian light standards and benches provide a period flavor. Near the center facing East Main Street are two war memorials, one honoring World War One and Two veterans and the other honoring those who fought in the Vietnam War. Of greater interest is the Cogswell Memorial Fountain at the eastern edge. This bronze fountain (1883), a gift of Dr. Henry D. Cogswell, a local dentist, originally had a bust of Cogswell on top extending a glass of water. It has been replaced with an urn.
