Broad Street Green (aka Milford Green)

The Broad Street Green is a long (about 3.5 acres) and narrow strip of land in the center of Milford. Oriented on an east-west axis, it is bordered by North Broad Street and South Broad Street. It is evenly graded, slopes slightly to the west, and is surrounded by granite curbs. Five long rows of trees grace the well-manicured lawn. Mature maples and a few oak trees form the rows along the edges and down the center. Flowering crabapple and dogwood trees are planted in rows just inside the outermost rows. The five rows of trees are not as defined as they might be because many of the mature maples were not replaced and many of the cherry trees are very young. Two evergreen trees are situated in the center of the green east of high street.

The monuments on the green are particularly impressive. They are situated down the center of the green on either side of High Street. Immediately to the east of High Street is a tall, grey, stone Civil War Monument, Union solider on a tall base (1888) and surrounded by a bed of flowers. To the east of it is an octagonal bandstand (c. 1890). Continuing east is a Vietnam and Korean War memorial (1986), two bronze service men facing in the opposite direction on top a granite base. On the other side of High Street (almost in the road) is the Ford Memorial Fountain (1910). Continuing west is a tall memorial flagpole honoring World War II veterans and surrounded by plantings. Further east is a memorial bell and a granite memorial commemorating Milford Firemen. The eastern tip of the green consists of a narrow brick triangle upon which is a three-tiered memorial cast iron fountain dedicated to Joseph Barrett and Sons, Inc., General Contractor, 1897-1954.
