Suffield Town Green

The large Suffield Town Green is oriented along the east side of Route 75 (North and South Main Street) that runs through the center of town in a north-south direction. It is bounded by Route 75 on the east and High Street on the west, a one-way street going south. In addition, it is the terminus for three east-west oriented streets, and as a result, is subject to a lot of traffic.

The green itself is divided into three parts by intersecting streets which were at one time called South Park, Middle Park and North Park. The green slopes gently from the northwest to the southeast. Because of its size, no single element dominates, although the institutional buildings on the Suffield Academy campus to the northwest of the green have a strong presence.

Houses from the 18th and 19th century are located all around the green but the greatest concentration is along the northern part of Route 75. The 20th century is represented along the southern part of Route 75 by larger commercial buildings and by the new library constructed between 1960-1970 as part of an urban renewal project. A lot now called Veterans Park was never redeveloped and remains open, leaving a hole in the wall around the green created by the buildings surrounding it. The Baptist Church and the Congregational Church are located on either side of the green near the center.

Several species of healthy trees provide shade including sugar maple, pin oak, flowering dogwood, tulip popular, northern catalpa, crabapple, and sycamore trees. They are planted mainly near the perimeter. The northern portion of the green is crossed by several paths. Granite curbs protect part of the green along Route 75 but otherwise the green meets the pavement. A bandstand (1976) which replicates the 19th century original is located in the center.

There are several monuments on the green including a Civil War Monument (1888) comprised of a Union soldier on top a tall base; a Revolutionary War Monument erected by the Daughters of the American Revolution; and a cannon. They are all located on the center portion. The green is an elegant focal point for the town and is used for town gatherings, music festivals, and fairs.
