Ivoryton Town Park

The Ivoryton Park is located in the center of the Village of Ivoryton. It is a triangular-shaped parcel of about .8 acres at the intersection of North Main and Main Streets. A chain link fence on the western boundary divides the park from the adjacent properties. Along North Main Street is a split rail fence. What amounts to a town parking lot (eight spaces) is provided for on the green off of Main Street.

The park itself slopes from the north down to the southeast to the tip of the intersection where a flagpole is located. It is lit and around it are planted bulbs and a dense evergreen and shrub mass. An asphalt path leads directly across the park from North Main Street to the parking area.

Along North Main Street are several mature deciduous trees planted along the road's edge including tulip, sugar maple and hickory trees. Some of the sugar maples appear to be about 100 years old. Along the Main Street edge are two mature trees under planted with many small dwarf rhododendrons and azaleas mixed with bulbs which helps to screen the parking lot from the street. The west side of the park has several evergreens, hemlock, spruce and blue spruce with several flowering dogwoods interspersed among them. The other side (on the east side of the path) is a mixture of white pine and more dogwood trees. Three benches and two picnic tables are scattered along its perimeter. No memorials are found in the park.

The area surrounding the park is residential and commercial. Since it lies at the heart of the village center, the southern side of the park is located on the main commercial and civic street. To the west is the Ivoryton Playhouse (c. 1925), the most dominant structure in the center. It still functions as a theater. The compact commercial area is comprised primarily of late 19th and 20th century residences converted to commercial use. For the most part their integrity has been compromised, but they form a cohesive streetscape and generate activity that reflects positively on the green (which is not true of the gas station located just south of the commercial block.) The other buildings around the green are mostly widely-spaced modest houses from the 19th and 10th centuries. Across from the green along North Main Street is a large densely wooded lot.

The town center is oriented around the green, a function of the schools that were on the lot prior to the green which were the focal point of the community. As a result, the green fits very neatly and naturally into the town landscape. During the summer, concerts and church fairs are held in the park.
