The integrity of the Canton Green has been negatively impacted by the widening of Route 44 and the strip development along it. The transition from residential to commercial development continues as reflected in the badly altered 18th-century house across from the northwest corner of the green and the conversion to commercial use of the single family 19th-century houses along Dowd Avenue. If the trend continues, the streetscape will offer no hint of the historic role this greensward once played in the development of the community.
