Renewal.

Although no longer as unique a commemorative space as it once was, the park is vigorously maintained by the city. The Garfield Monument, which was damaged by a car driven by a drunken driver earlier this year (1993), was immediately repaired and replaced on its pedestal. Despite the condition of the old maple, the trees and shrubs on the site appear healthy. There seem to be no short-term threats, only the long-term consideration of its small size (compared with Rogers Park) for veteran-oriented events and the obvious linking of its future to the fortunes of downtown, only a mile or so away.
