Memorial Green - Town Green

Select a Green:

Memorial Green is a good example of a modern town green. Old Saybrook's original town green was located at the intersection of North Main Street and Route 1. When that green was destroyed by road widening in the 1960s, the war memorial on the site was moved to its present location. At that time the area existed simply as a green lawn. Gradually, it became the town green, with the addition of the Korean War Memorial, a flagpole, gazebos, and landscaping.

Today the green is used as a commemorative site and several seasonal functions are held here. A Memorial Day celebration and a torchlight community carol sing in December are well attended.

Memorial Green is an excellent example of a modern green created in the 20th century.
